About Mendocino College's Screening Process

Screening Committees

Mendocino College uses committees to review applications, create interview questions, select interview candidates and conduct interviews. Screening committees consists of District members; representing staff, faculty, and management. Using screening committees ensures an equitable hiring process.

Because of this unique process, it may take six to eight weeks from a posting's closing date before you are notified if you are selected for an interview.

After a position closes, Human Resources reviews all applications and eliminates any applications that do not meet the posted minimum qualifications or any incomplete applications.

The remaining applications will be given to the screening committee for their review and scoring. Screening committees use a scoring rubric that scores the applications based off their education and experience as it relates to the position. After the committee is finished scoring the applications Human Resources tallies the scores and the committee makes their final selections on who they want to offer an interview too.

Human Resources will contact all applicants to inform them if they have or have not been selected for an interview.

Tips for Applying

  • Read the complete job announcement carefully before applying.
  • Review the application procedure section to ensure you have the necessary information for applying. Incomplete applications will not be forwarded to the screening committee.
  • Check for spelling and grammar errors. The application materials are your main screening document. Be thorough and provide details as they relate to the position in which you are applying.
  • Answer every supplemental question.
  • Keep in mind that your application is the primary screening document for the committee's review. Your application is their first impression of you so making sure it's thorough and accurate is important.

Interview Process

We strongly recommend every applicant read about the interview process before interviewing.

If you are selected for an interview a team member from the Human Resources department will contact you via phone to schedule the interview and go over the interview details.

Below is the process interviewees can expect:

  • Written Response: Most (not all) job positions require a demonstration of a candidate's writing skills. Candidates are typically given 20 to 30 minutes, right before the oral interview, to complete the written task on a computer. The topic is not provided in advance, however, it will relate to the position the candidate is interviewing for.
  • Interview Question Review: During the written response time period candidates can also review the interview questions that will be asked during the interview. Candidates are allowed to take notes to refer to during the interview.
  • Oral Interview: Interviews typically last between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the position. Each candidate is allotted the same amount of time. The committee chair will introduce the committee and explain the interview process before starting. Committee members will then take turns asking questions. We recommend candidates take their time to thoroughly answer each question, ensuring they cover all aspects. Candidates should not assume the committee is familiar with every detail of their application and should respond as if the committee has no prior knowledge. It's important to be comprehensive, mentioning education/training, past and current employment, and any other relevant details related to the position being applied for.
  • Presentation/Demonstration: Depending on the position, some interviews will include a presentation/demonstration component.  If there is a required presentation, the Human Resources team member scheduling the initial interview will inform the candidate of the requirement as well as discuss the presentation topic and parameters.  The presentation/demonstration will be presented by the candidate as part of the oral interview process.
  • What to expect after the interview:  Within 3 business days of the interview, candidates will be contacted by the Human Resources department by either telephone call to offer them a second level interview or by email informing them that they are not advancing in the interview process.
  • Second Level Interviews: Candidates are notified of the second level interview date at the time their interview is scheduled so they can plan accordingly. The second level interview committee is Mendocino College's President/Superintendent, one of our three Vice Presidents and the committee chair (some recruitments have a co-chair as well).
  • After Second Level Interviews: Relax, the toughest part is behind you! Once reference checks are completed, the committee will select a finalist. The Human Resources Director will then contact the chosen candidate with an employment offer. Additionally, the Human Resources Director will inform the other candidates that they will not be advancing in the hiring process.
